"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." - Romans 15:13
We all have those days when it seems the world is against us and hope is elusive. These are the days we need to take hold of Romans 15:13 and understand true hope isn’t beholden to circumstances or feelings. Hope is a supernatural promise we receive from God and the overflow of the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Hope lives in the invisible realm of God so our five senses cannot help when we feel hopeless.
In 2 Kings, we are told the story of a woman who is recently widowed, left with two sons and a tremendous debt to pay. Because of this, her sons are in danger of being taken from her and sold into slavery to repay the debt. She's lost her husband, her security, her future, and now her sons are in danger of being taken from her. Do you think she felt hopeless?
In desperation, she seeks out the prophet Elisha for help and he asks her a simple question in response to her, "What do you have in your house?” She replies, “I have nothing . . . except a small jar of oil.” He then instructs her to borrow as many empty containers as she can find and take them into her house. Once inside, she is to pour the oil she has in the small jar into the empty ones. She obeys and positions the small jar of oil over one of the empty containers and begins to pour. When the oil continued to flow after the small jar should have emptied, she realizes there is a supernatural work taking place from the oil she already possessed. Container after container is filled with the overflowing jar of oil until she has no more containers to fill, and the Bible says, “Then the oil stopped flowing.” There was an overflowing amount of hope available to her until her need was met.
We are told in Romans 15:13 that the God of hope will pour an overflowing amount of hope by the power of the Holy Spirit in your life — if you trust him. In the face of the valley you are walking through, what the world may tell you, the lies the enemy has whispered, or how you feel, know this — the God of hope has poured in you the supernatural oil of the Holy Spirit which will continue as long as you are here on this earth.
Your hope isn’t based on anything in the visible physical world. Your hope lives in the unseen world and you are the overflowing vessel receiving God's supernatural hope.
